He was commissioned on 11 May 1780 with the rank of Cornet, in the service of the 10th Hussars.^3,6 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 28 April 1783.⁶ He gained the rank of Captain on 24 October 1787.⁶ He gained the rank of Major on 1 March 1794.⁶ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 29 April 1795.⁶ He was General Equerrry to the Duke of Cumberland in 1800.³ He gained the rank of Colonel on 29 April 1802.⁶ He gained the rank of Brigadier in June 1804.⁶ He fought in the Battle of Sahagun on 20 December 1808, where he led the 10th Regiment of Foot in the cavalry action.⁶ He was commander of the Cavalry Brigade between 1809 and 1813.³ He gained the rank of Major-General on 25 October 1809.⁶ He fought in the Battle of Busaco on 27 September 1810.⁶ He fought in the Battle of Fuentes d'Onoro between 3 May 1811 and 5 May 1811.³ He fought in the Battle of Corunna in 1812.³ He fought in the Battle of Liera on 11 June 1812.⁶ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General on 4 June 1814.⁶ He was Colonel of the 5th Dragoon Guards on 30 September 1831.³ He was created 1st Baronet Slade, of Maunsel House, Somerset [U.K.] on 30 September 1831.³ He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1835.¹ He gained the rank of General on 10 January 1837.⁶
