Richard Shaw Morton

  General Notes:

Richard's first family seem to have considered/believed him dead from the late 1870's onward,although he did not actually die until 1907.

My Auntie Ett ( Ethel Stonard b.1897) told me in about 1988 that Alice's father died in Florence when she was about 15, ie.1878, & that he was a travelling valet.

Alice's marriage cert. of 1887 states that her father Richard is deceased.

Elizabeth describes herself on the 1891 census as a widow.

Richard describes himself as widowed on the 1891 census. Presumably his partner Jane died between 1881 & 1891. Elizabeth died in 1913.

I do not believe R & E ever divorced;ordinary people didnt in the 19th century.

The 2 families lived quite close together in London; Richard in Vauxhall & Elizabeth in Battersea.

I do not know if the 2 sets of children, Alice & Charles and Jane/Jennie & Herbert ever knew of each others existence.

Richard married Elizabeth Maddocks Sharpington, daughter of Thomas Sharpington and Martha Maddocks, on 27 Mar 1862 in St Marys Church, St Marylebone, London. (Elizabeth Maddocks Sharpington was born on 29 Jul 1832 in Springfield, Essex, christened on 9 Sep 1832 in Baddow Lane Old Chapel or Old Meeting House, Chelmsford, Essex and died on 20 Sep 1915 in Union Workhouse, St Johns Hill, Battersea.)

Richard had a relationship with Jane Spencer, daughter of John Spencer and Lucy Richards. (Jane Spencer was born Mar Q 1843 in City of London and died Jun Q 1889 in Hackney.)
