Robert Walter Campbell Shelford (1872-1912) was born in Singapore. Shelford was educated privately until he entered King's College, London and later Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He went to Borneo to become the curator of the Sarawak Museum and later worked in the Hope Department entomological collections of Oxford University, England. Shelford was a naturalist and a leading authority on cockroaches.

Demonstrator in biology at the Yorkshire College, Leeds, 1895-7. Curator of the Sarawak Museum at Kuching, 1897-1904. In the Hope Department of Oxford Univ. Museum from 1905.
