John Joseph Garvey
Noted events in his life were: • Occupation: Boatswain RN, 1861, HMS Doris. John married Caroline Jane Urry, daughter of James Urry and Martha Young, on 13 Nov 1854 in St Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire. (Caroline Jane Urry was born about 1829 in Southampton and died in 1905.)
John joined the Navy aged 15 in 1839 with the rating boy 2nd class, his 1st ship was HMS Blenheim. He served on Blenheim from 9/6/1839 to 28/3/1843. The ships he served on were:- HMS Camperdown HMS Hyacinth HMS Excellent HMS Hound HMS Excellent HMS Amphitrite HMS Portland HMS steam sloop Hecla HMS Blenheim other ships he served on were HMS Shamrock, Doris, Indus, Aboukir, and Asia by 1861 he had been promoted to Boatswain 2nd class. He retired in 1871 settling down on Portsea Island in Hampshire and he died of complications of Gangrene at his home at 1 Clydesdale Terrace with his daughter Ellen Martha in attendence. reproduced in part from Andrew Garvey's book "Over and on the Sea" with kind permission |
