During the research of my family, I have come across what appears to be a family trait. Local politics seem to run in our blood.
John Taylor
Mayor of Louth 1897 – 1898
Maud Swift Mayor of Peterborough 1959 – 1960
(John Taylor’s gggranddaughter)
Awarded Freedom of the City in 1978
Mayor of Peterborough
1960-1961
(Maud Swift’s son)
Awarded the OBE and Freedom of the City in1884
Deputy Mayor of Peterborough
1959-1960, 2004-2005
Alice Cockcroft
Mayor of Dewsbury
1966-1967
(John Taylor’s greatgreatgrandaughter
Maud’s sister)
Mayor of Peterborough 1980-1981
(Maud Swift’s daughter)
Deputy Mayor of Peterborough 1975-1976
Deputy Mayor of Peterborough 1987-1988
Mayoress of Peterborough 1988-1989
Deputy Mayoress of Peterborough 1996-1997
Other family members have been either, Consorts, Mayoress or Deputy Mayoress. A housing complex and a Street have been named in honour of two members. One has been the recipient of The Royal Maundy.
At present there are no noticeable plans for the next generation to follow in the political footsteps, but who knows what the future may hold.
